Yoga School was originally designed as a ‘Beginner’s course’ with the intention giving students an introduction into the what, why, and how of yoga practice while increasing their comfort level and confidence in the practice room. In its evolution the content of the course has evolved and proven itself to be beneficial to seasoned practitioners as well as beginners. This course holds the potential to not only deepen a practitioner's understanding of postures, but also delivers a perspective on the practice that is often forgotten and holds the potential to be truly transformative on and off the mat.
This six-session course begins with a lecture session that introduces the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of yoga practice using regular, everyday digestible language. While it does not directly include traditional yogic philosophy it does stay true to the foundation of the practice of yoga and how it can influence our relationships, our lives and our world. This session is guaranteed to give both the beginner and the avid practitioner some potentially life-altering insights into the beautiful practice of yoga.
Sessions two through six consist of a mixture of discussion, light practices and posture clinics that demonstrate visual alignment, and modifications while addressing the intelligence of asana practice and giving the practitioner the opportunity to feel it in their own body.
This course is by no means the be all and end all of yoga practice. While it only give us a glimps of asana (postures) practice, it does summarise and remind us of the ultimate goal of the practice. To Love. It is a casual approach that makes the fundamental teachings of yoga philosophy accessible, while familiarising and expanding the practitioner’s knowledge of asana practice and the potential that Yoga might hold.
Troy was born in Trinidad & Tobago, which is pretty much where he has spent the majority of his life aside from attending university in Tampa, FL, and his stints of travel, exploration and study.
Troy originally completed his first 500hr YTT in 2006 and over the last 14 years has attained an additional 1500hrs of training hours with experienced and profound teachers. Through commitment to his practice and study, Troy has tapped into a depth of practice that transcends the physical form of Asana. In his teaching he intends to bring practitioners into a new relationship with their breath as a form of Spirit, thereby having the practice embody a personal Prayer.
Troy views the science of yoga as a personal practice and one’s own journey of self-discovery; for that reason he is continuously aiming to create a space that is available and comfortable for all to practice, regardless of their faith, age, or physical limitations.
With mindful, intentional movements Troy’s teaching brings a fresh and powerful dimension into today’s yoga class that helps bridge the gap between the pure essence of Yoga and today's disconnected world. At the foundation of Troy’s teaching is not the breath, but one’s relationship to the breath. In this we discover that no posture, no transition, no moment is ever the same; we discover what it means to live in the present moment, and finally we remember what it means to live from a place of Genuine Love.
Troy has been blessed with the inspiration and guidance of amazing teachers, including: Ryan Leier, Seane Corn, Father Joe Pereira (Iyengar Yoga), Baron Baptiste, Srivatsa Ramaswami (Vinyasa Krama), Leslie Kaminoff, Jess Robertson, and Ted Grand…among others.
Troy currently lives in a treehouse on the north coast of Trinidad and is constantly being reminded that Prana (the life force that connects and flows through all life) is very real.
